I am a vegetarian; so, so what if I am a vegetarian?
I was always laughed at and was told how I don't support in ecological balance. Well, having studied science, I always knew what ecological balance meant. It was already a matter of concern then.
Today it has become a roar, a CRY because by the rate we are going, we will not have anything left to save in some time from now. All this is because of our own negligence. We have failed to protect the gifts of nature that we had. There are a number of species of plants and animals both that we have already lost permanently. There are a number of species which are already declared endangered including our national animal, the tiger. According to an estimate there were at least 50,000 Bengal tigers in India alone in the 19th century. By the turn of the century 40,000 tigers were estimated in India, but soon it was revealed by the All India Tiger census that the total population was reduced to just 1800 in 1972. Shocking isn’t it? There is a reason for this. As recently as 1970 the hunting of tigers was legal in India and this magnificent hunter was hunted by the erstwhile royals and elites for pleasure and its beautiful skin. During 1950s and 1960s around 30,000 tigers lost their lives to trophy hunters.
The revelation of the total number of tigers was shocking enough for the concerned authorities to take immediate steps to save tigers. As a result of this concern, Project Tiger was launched in 1972.
India has around 60% of the world’s tiger population. If we do not take any step now then a hunter as intelligent and swift as tiger will be lost forever. It will be no more than an image left in books and journals as one of the lost species. Our future generations will not be able to witness the royal elegance hidden in our beautiful forests.
Today we have only 1411 tigers left in our Jungles.
Just think about it; one of the most majestic animals is moving towards extinction. But how and what can we do to save tigers? And by the way, how does saving a royal beast help me? It is a big question.
Hmmm! lets try to analyze the reason.
Tiger is a carnivore, a hunter. It eats herbivores like spotted deer, sambhar and other animals there by saving the forest from over grazing and depletion. Not only this, it also feeds on old and sick herbivorous animals helping in saving the population from diseases.
So saving tigers means saving our jungles which means preventing global warming, droughts, land slides, soil erosion, maintaining the balance in the current ecosystem and there by maintaining healthy and desired gene pool; the list is big.
So the inference is, we being vegetarians does not hold any significance in ecological balance but diminishing tiger population definitely affects this balance.
So let us do whatever we can to save our national animal. Read about tigers, write blogs, educate people around; your friends, relatives, kids in your locality and elders. If you are an art lover stop buying artifacts made up of tiger bones. Try to raise sensitivity towards this issue. Let’s save our royal cats for ourselves and for our better future.
Let us save our NATIONAL ANIMAL Panthera Trigris aka TIGER.
